Jake Shields is calling out the best fighters even at Lightweight and Middleweight

Jake Shields has come a long way in EliteXC since signing on with them in 2007 and has waited patiently even going through an injury to his back to finally fight and win the vacant Welterweight title. Shields this past Saturday beat a really good fighter in Nick "The Goat" Thompson at just over a minute in the opening round with a guillotine choke submission. When being interviewed right after the fight Shields said that he would like to challenge UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St.Pierre and/or number 1 contender Jon Fitch, but Shields had this to say on the matter,

“I guess that was a mistake, I just kind of called them out, but that fight realistically won’t happen next,” he said of St. Pierre and Fitch. “Those are two guys I’d really love to fight right now. Two of the top guys at my weight, I’ve got a lot of respect for both of them, that’s why I want to fight them.”

However; Shields also says that there are quality opponents in EliteXC and will be ready for whoever they will give him to fight, even taking a fight in the middleweight division. “I’m willing to fight up a weight,” said Shields. “I’d fight Robbie Lawler, Frank Shamrock, if Elite wants me to do something like that, I’d be happy to do that.” He even mentions figthing Shinya Aoki in the future is possible. Shields wants to fight at least one more time before the year is out and possibly that could happen at EliteXC's next event on CBS in October, but for now Shields will head straight back to the gym for training to prepare for the next challenge.
