Alves Vs Sanchez not happening at UFC 89

5 new fights were confirmed for this week for UFC 89 card in Birmingham, England on October 18. Lyoto Machida vs Thiago Silva, Wilson Gouveia vs Jeremy Horn, Shane Carwin vs Neil Wain, Sokoudjou vs Luis Cane and Chris Lytle vs Paul Taylor (in case you missed the announcements). One of the most notable fights that was rumored for a while was Diego Sanchez vs Thiago Alves which was missing from the announcements. Now according to Wrestling Observer the very anticipated match may not be happening on the UFC 89 card as previously rumored. On their site they had this to say “The Thiago Alves vs. Diego Sanchez match earmarked for 10/18 in Birmingham, England will not be taking place on the show. The Thiago Silva vs. Lyoto Machida match announced yesterday was to take its place. We don’t have an update yet on the status of Alves-Sanchez, other than the match has not been signed.”

UFC 90 is confirmed to be a week after this card in Chicago on October 25 who knows if this fight will happen then? If this fight does not happen it would come as a major disappointment as both of these fighters are on top of their games and a punch or kick away from a title shot. It will be interesting if the winner of this fight gets a title shot after Jon Fitch because Josh Koscheck is waiting in the wings winning 7 of his last 8 fights. His only loss was to current Welterweight Champion Georges St.Pierre and his stand up has improved a lot since then. Koscheck also owns a win over Diego Sanchez in a match that was uneventful but significant. Either way with Karo Parisyan already talking a possible rematch with Alves so this should make for interesting fights for at least a year as the welterweight division always has.
