It seems that the UFC and Roger Huerta may be in for a long grueling contract negotiation after he fights Kenny Florian at UFC 87 this Saturday. Huerta who has one fight left on his deal has been very vocal in his contract status making it no secret he will walk away from the UFC for a better deal. He has been quoted as saying he was only paid $50 for publicity work he has done for events in the past. He was also very vocal and upset about a video clip the UFC edited that said his fight against Florian was going to be a "cakewalk". The footage was apparently edited to make it look like pre-fight hype and trash talk. Today in a article written by Dave Meltzer of f4wonline.com (subscription needed) is reporting that the UFC and Huerta are still far off on a new deal. Huerta, who has one fight left on his contact after the Florian fight, is far apart with UFC on terms for a renewal. Huerta, who has gotten a new agent, was asking for six-figures guaranteed per fight as well as points on the PPV, in negotiations that haven’t gone well for some time. That’s a better deal then [BJ] Penn, so he wasn’t going to get it. The UFC position is that they groomed Huerta and pushed him hard and were careful of his opponents, with the exception of Clay Guida. As we know the UFC is not known for easy negotiations when it comes to fighters with one fight left on their deals. They will not hesitate to put Roger's last fight on an undercard or against an opponent they think can beat him. They did it to Arlovski and to Tito Ortiz and Brandon Vera, so I don't think this will come to an end any time soon. Lets hope both can come to a agreement because I wouldn't want to see Huerta beat Florian and miss a potential title shot over a contract dispute. One thing is becoming more apparent fighters are seeing the salaries that Affliction is being paying out and looking for financial freedom in the future. This will be a ongoing theme for years to come now that MMA has gone mainstream like the NFL, MLB and NBA.
UPDATE- Dana White in a interview with Hardcore Sports Radio called Roger Huerta an idiot who should should stop bitching for trash talking the UFC about its public relations. Dana also basically said if he beats Florian it would be a different story, but was not worth the millions of dollars he wanted in his new deal. This is just more of a ongoing battle that should take a while to resolve. As we have said before Dana does not take kindly to fighters who bash the UFC in the media.
