As we informed you yesterday we gave you an update on a possible Georges St.Pierre vs BJ Penn rematch. BJ stated in a interview that he is willing to fight St.Pierre or Jon Fitch if necessary for the Welterweight Championship at the end of the year. Now in an interview with Dave Meltzer of Yahoo!sports.com St.Pierre talked about the potential fight with the UFC Lightweight Champion. St.Pierre says he is not going to be drawn into the hype of the future fight when he has Jon Fitch a very dangerous opponent in front of him now.
“I don’t even think about B.J. Penn. I’m going to fight Jon Fitch for my first title defense. I have a chance to succeed where I failed the last time. It’s almost a year-and-a-half since I lost my first title defense and now I have a chance to redeem myself and succeed.”
It seems St.Pierre does not want to overlook Fitch mentally which is smart. Fitch may be the most credible threat to St.Pierre's welterweight title in the whole division. The last time St.Pierre overlooked an opponent in the Octagon was the first time and last time he defended his first welterweight championship against Matt Serra. St.Pierre did not seem as if he was worried about Serra's improved stand up skills and was knocked out in the first round. So it's a good thing he is concentrated on Fitch and hopefully we will know after tonight how close we are to a potential fight with the current UFC champions.
