Rumor - Sanchez vs Alves at UFC 90

As we all know last week 5 fights were announced for UFC 89 in England but the long rumored co-main event between Thiago Alves (16-3) vs Diego Sanchez (19-2) was not one of the fights made official. Now according to MMATakeover.com the fight is being put together for UFC 90 in Chicago, one week after UFC 89. This fight should have serious consequences on future title shots for both Sanchez and Alves. Both are coming off of impressive wins, Alves defeated Matt Hughes at UFC 85 extending his win streak to 6 straight fights. Sanchez defeated ATT product Luigi Fioravanti at The Ultimate Fighter Finale last month extending his current win streak to 2 fights. Sanchez lost his 2 previous fights to Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch and has rebounded with quality wins.
Alves last loss came to current welterweight number 1 contender Jon Fitch at Ultimate Fight Night 5 in 2006 and he has improved leaps and bounds since then. He has back to back wins over tough competition in Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan back at UFN-13. Alves might have made the road to a championship harder on himself after coming in overweight for his fight against Hughes at UFC 85. Alves told the press he had sprained his ankle training a few weeks before the fight and effected his ability to cut the extra pounds to make the 170 pound weight limit. We will keep you posted if and when this fight becomes official.
