Jon Fitch is upset about any talk about a possible Georges St.Pierre vs BJ Penn fight at the end of the year. For a guy who has beaten Diego Sanchez, Thiago Alves and Josh Burkman and is undefeated in the UFC at 8-0 he feels as if he is being overlooked. Fitch has won 15 straight fights since losing to fellow UFC fighter Wilson Gouveia, who now fights in a weight class 35 pounds heavier then Fitch now. Fitch is a definite dark horse as he is set to face Georges St.Pierre who is a top 5 pound for pound fighter in the world. Fitch himself is not lacking in skill and possesses all the right tools to give the current Welterweight Champion a run for his money at UFC 87: Seek and Destroy in less than two weeks from now on August 9. He has wrestled for the Purdue Boilermakers in NCAA Division 1 and also has a black belt in Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu under Dave Camarillo, the founder of a mix of Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. Here is what Fitch had to say in his UFC blog.
"Outside of training, I’ve heard some talk over the last few weeks about BJ Penn moving up to 170 to fight GSP at the end of the year. Of course, they’ve forgotten that GSP has a fight with me first. But that just shows you where some people really are still in this sport and how they still have no idea what’s going on. There are a lot of so-called experts out there, but they know nothing about the sport. They’re spectators on the outside watching the sport through a telescope, and they think they’re on the inside and know everything, but they don’t. You can’t let that stuff bother you though. I think it’s funny and it’s just that little extra pleasure at the end of the day when you win and all those people are exposed."
I like Fitch's confidence and that he knows he is coming in as the underdog and is upset about it, the last time St.Pierre faced someone with the same mind frame was Matt Serra and he ended up knocking him out. Spoiling St.Pierre's second attempt at a title defense is Fitch's goal and should not be underestimated as many "favorites" in the past two years have ended up on the other end of a shocking loss that has proven the experts (Fitch mentions) wrong.
