Side notes from UFC 85: Bedlam.

Side Notes that do not show up in results .
Matt Hughes (left) and Thiago Silva

- Alves might get an Asterisk on this win because he weighed in 4 pounds overweight on Friday (174) and Matt Hughes still took the fight at a catchweight. Alves may have won the fight but lost the confidence of Dana White for a future title shot consideration.

- Thales Leites might have got the win but Marquardt lost a point in the 2nd round because of a Illegal knee while Leites was on the ground. In the 3rd round he lost another point for a Illegal blow to the back of the head, but the punch that landed was to the side of Leites' head when seen in a replay. Referee Herb Dean had already warned Marquardt about watching the back of the head and did not have the benefit of seeing the instant replay when he took the point away from Marquardt.

Marquardt also pulled off a Piledriver on Leites for the attempted win in the last 10 seconds of the 3rd Round of their fight. Leites landed on his face and was bloody and bruised after the fight but left with a win.

Brandon Vera (left) and Fabricio Werdum

Fabricio Werdum's win over Brandon Vera was very impressive, but he was still booed by the English crowd. They probably remembered his lackluster (Slap) fight against Andrei Arlovski at UFC 70. Referee Dan Miragliotta seemed to call the fight early and the crowd's frustration was taken out on Werdum. Werdum was in a full mount and landed punches to Vera's head at will when the fight was called 20 seconds left in the round. At first it seemed like a early stoppage and then upon further replay it seemed like the worse stoppage. Vera was in little danger and was still defending Werdum's punches but Miragliotta (who was criticized for not ending the Kimbo Vs Thompson fight in the 2nd round and may have had it fresh on his mind) stopped the fight with 20 seconds left in the 1st Round.

Matt Wiman looked very improved in his win over Thiago Tavares. His Jiu-Jitsu looked very improved and his KO of the highly touted Tavares was very impressive. Wiman has showed a lot of growth since the Ultimate Fighter and 155 just got a bit more stacked.
